The House of ATHEM

From the harbour of Themistocles to the terminals of the world

In the fifth century BC, Athens built a navy and with it a trading empire that ran on grain from the Black Sea, oil and wine from the islands, and marble from Paros. The merchant captains of that age worked without charts or engines, reading winds, headlands and stars.

ATHEM Holding Inc. is a Marshall Islands vessel-owning company, operated from Piraeus, established to acquire, own and operate modern drybulk and tanker tonnage. The corporate vehicle is purpose-built and new; the seamanship behind it is not.

Penelopi Emmanouilidis holds an MSc in Shipping Science from the University of West London and brings 30 years of hands-on vessel ownership and management, including more than 20 sale-and-purchase transactions across drybulk carriers, product tankers and chemical tankers. She works alongside her father, Athanassios Emmanouilidis, whose career at sea and ashore spans more than five decades.

Investment Strategy

Four disciplines, each kept like a god's law

Poseidon

Counter-Cyclical Acquisition

We invest in market downturns or at the early stages of an upcycle, minimising exposure to asset-value fluctuation.

Athena

Downside-Based Underwriting

Every investment decision is underwritten on low-market scenarios — never on an expected market upturn.

Hermes

Diversified Trades

Exposure spread across drybulk carriers and product/chemical tankers to manage the cyclicality of each segment.

Hephaestus

Modern, Average-Aged Tonnage

Medium-sized investments in units typically 10–15 years old, balancing acquisition cost against remaining earning life.

Fleet · 1991 – 2023

Twenty-four vessels owned or managed across three decades

General cargo, handysize and Supramax bulk carriers, product tankers and oil / chemical tankers — each acquisition financed and repaid without a single default.
